Candie Martinez

Candie C. Martinez, 79, of Chama, New Mexico passed away on Saturday January 21, 2023 in Melbourne, FL. Candie was born in Canjilon, New Mexico on November 11, 1943, daughter of the late Adolfo Chavez and Inomia Montano.  She lived in Chama, NM for most of her life.

She was preceded by her husband of 56 years, Manuel “Butch” Martinez.

Candie retired as Vice President-Bank Manager of Bank of America in Chama after working there for over 30 years. She continued her career as Manager of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad.  She also served the Village of Chama in various ways.  She was elected as the first female, write in candidate for Mayor, serving from 1979 – 1982.  Loved by the community, she served on the Dunham Clinic Board, was President of the Community Music Festival for 5 years and served on the New Mexico Chiropractic Licensing Board. She is most recently known for organizing, alongside Butch, The Chama High School Reunion.  This event was shared by so many cherishedfriends, and somehow gave everyone a step back in time.  

She is survived by siblings, Mabel Chavez, Mary “Chon” Pacheco (Robert), Elisena “Chena” Martinez (Santiago), Adolfo “Pops” Chavez Jr. and Jo Pat Chavez, and her children Daphne Charvet (Joel) of Rockledge, FL., Manuel Martinez, Jr. (Lena-passed 2012), of Chama, NM., and Beatriz Martinez (Jason Hill-passed 2009), of Albuquerque, NM., 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews and beloved friends.

Candie was also predeceased by her Brother Don Gallegos and Sister Rosabra Quintana (Manuel) and oldest grandson Tim Justice.
